As A Director . . .
As a director and designer, I’ve created series, music videos and ads for networks, artists and agencies like Nickelodeon, MTV, NBC, Comedy Central, UFC, Will Smith, Cindy Lauper, DDB, Foote Cone & Belding and others. My designs have been realized in stage sets, miniatures and animation for broadcast, cable and the web. I have trouble drawing a straight line, but that’s never slowed me down.
After Graduating . . .
After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth School of Design, I started my career in New York at Broadcast Arts where we produced iconic MTV animation and the groundbreaking series “Pee Wee’s Playhouse”. I designed, built and performed as Pee Wee’s robot Conky 2000. Conky was powered by an electric wheelchair battery and would shock me regularly.
Alphabet City . . .
Alphabet City in NYC was home base to design and direct music videos, series and ads for MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central I received an MTV Music Video Awards nomination for Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince ‘Parent’s Just Don’t Understand’, then re-created that formula for the “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. Fab 5 Freddy called me “fly with a pencil”.
No Rules . . .
“There are no rules”. That was the mantra when I received the call to design a fighting arena for a new pay-per-view mixed-martial arts event. The event was “The Ultimate Fighting Championship”, or “UFC” and the eight-sided arena I designed for the jiu-jitsu Gracies , kick boxers and sumo wrestlers to battle in is now known worldwide as the “Octagon”.
Loaded up the . . .
Loaded up the truck and moved to LA, but still tapped into my southern roots to write, direct and produce “Brickface & Stucco” for MTV. I received a Broadcast Design Award for the series. Next up, “The Adventures of Patch Head” for Nickelodeon, followed by “Club Dead” for MTV” then the award winning “What’s in Heidi’s Head” series with Nancye Ferguson & Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo for “Noggin”.
The Family Farm . . .
The family farm (Harrison Publishing Company or Pubco for short) called, so I hightailed it back to NC as Creative Director, launching digital production and marketing for the family biz. I continued in publishing, launching Harrison Greetings back in California. It was my dad Bill Harrison, the Pubco founder and nationally syndicated cartoonist, who taught me how to sketch a wacky character (and ride a bike).
The expendables . . .
The expendables, that’s what we serve up at Harrison Bros., where I joined the brotherhood as Creative Director. Website design, online animation, digital marketing, a little code and a lot of tape, it’s all in a day’s work serving up thousands of customers across the USA.
